The Benefits of Sehri

Suhur/Sehri is an Arabic word meaning meal eaten in the early morning before fasting in the month of Ramzan. The meal is eaten before the dawn and stopped right there and then. There are many rewards and virtues of sehri but most people miss them because of their laziness.
Ibn Umar (RA) relates: Rasulullah (SAW) said: ‘Verily Allah and His Malaa’ikah send Mercy upon those who eat ‘Sehri’ (sower-Suhoor).”
The time of sehri is during the last portion of the night. Therefore people who are lazy to wake during the correct time of sehri and eat during the middle of the night are deprived from the complete Thawab of Suhur through this action.
Rasulullah (SAW) also said: 'The difference between our fasting and that of the Ahlul-Kitaab (Jews and Christians) lies in our partaking of food at "Sehri" which they do not." The Prophet has said, "Eat Sehri, because in it lie great blessings; and again.”In three things, are the great blessings: in ''Jama'ah" (company), in eating "Thareed" and in "Sehri".
Hazrat Anas (RA) narrates that Rasulallah (SAW) Said: "Eat Sehri (food to be taken a little before dawn during the fasting month of Ramadan) that Sehri brings prosperity" (Bukhari, Muslim, tirmizi)

Hazrat Ibn Umarch (RA) relates: Rasulullah (SAW) said: 'Verily Allah and His Malaa'ikah send Mercy upon those who eat 'Sehri' (sower-Suhur)."
The niyaat  (intention) for sehri is very important. The Prophet (peace PBUH) said: “There is no fast for the person who did not intend to fast from the night before.” The niyat can be made during the night or just before fajr. Narrated by Ibn ‘Umar from Hafsah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever does not have the intention of fasting before Fajr, there is no fast for him.”
Sehri is a blessing and be best understood by this hadith.
Abdullah Ibn Haarith said that one of the Sahabah (companion) said: 'I entered the house of the Messenger (SAW) whilst he was taking the Suhoor (pre-dawn meal), and he (SAW) said: "Indeed it (the Suhoor) is blessing that Allah has given to you so do not leave it out, even if one of you just takes a (gulp) of water, since Allah sends mercy and His angels seek forgiveness for those who take the suhoor" [Ref: Ahmad]

  1. In Ramadhaan the Prophet [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] would eat Sehri and would declare it a blessed meal.
It is narrated from Zaid bin Haarith [radi allah anho]:
“The Prophet [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] ordered me to bring him some food at the time of sehri so I brought dates and water. He then ordered “See if there is anyone who will eat with me.” I called Zaid bin Thaabit who pleaded ‘Yaa Rasoolallah, I have already eaten and made the intention to fast.” The Prophet [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] replied “We too are going to fast” so he joined the Prophet [sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam] in sharing the Sahri.”
